For English, I usually use the ABC Extended or U.S. I'd added languages several times before, when I needed to type something in those languages. But I didn't (knowingly) do anything that should have changed the behavior of any input. What I was doing at the time was adding the names of several languages (that used the Cyrillic alphabet) to the keyboard preferences. It worked ok for the couple of months since I got the new Macbook Pro, and then in the middle of the day iTerm2 essentially became unusable. I have no idea what I might have done to trigger this perversity.
